FERMOY JUVENILE GAA

THANKS:

Special thanks go this week to Microsoft Ireland for their very kind support of Fermoy Juvenile GAA club under their exciting Governance initiative. The initiative was set up by the Irish-based computer firm to reward Community work in a practical and straightforward manner. Microsoft offered 10 grants of €1,000 each for worthy projects nationwide - and we were delighted to have Fermoy Juvenile GAA Club selected as one of the approved projects.

The €1,000 cheque was gratefully accepted recently by Chairman, Brendan Keane, and Treasurer, Geoff Wales, and will go towards the club’s ongoing work to promote Gaelic games within the community.

So ‘thank you’ to Microsoft for your very generous support - and a special ‘well done’ to former Treasurer, Mark Condon, for helping co-ordinate the club’s application under the grant scheme.

AGM:

The AGM of Fermoy Juvenile GAA Club will take place at 8pm on November 12 next in the clubhouse. All mentors and officials are pleased asked to attend this very important meeting. The AGM will be preceded by a regular monthly Board meeting on Monday, October 27 next at 8pm in the clubhouse.

FLOODLIGHTS:

Negotiations are currently ongoing about the installation of floodlights for Fermoy GAA pitch. All going well, we are hopeful that the floodlights will be installed and fully operational by late next year. This would be a huge addition to the club’s facilities given how impressive such floodlights have already proved for other clubs such as Mallow and Aghada.

It would also give the club enormous flexibility not only in terms of pitch usage for training purposes but also for attracting major league and championship fixtures.

U8:

Our Ó Crualaoí Super Leagues continues next weekend at Fermoy GAA pitch with the second last series of matches in the popular Gaelic football series! We took a break from competition for the October Bank Holiday weekend so the third round games will resume on November 1 next at 10 am at the main Fermoy GAA pitch.

For those who were not in attendance over the past two weekends, the Super Leagues is a mini-Gaelic football tournament featuring teams of around eight-a-side. Each team will play each other on consecutive Saturdays. Teams will be devised so that each team has a reasonable chance of winning but regardless of which after the Super League is finished each boy will be presented with exactly the same medal. The emphasis will be on fun not winning!!

The cost per Saturday is €2 - and the usual rules apply about gear, proper footwear and a drink of water for refreshment. The entire series will be supervised by experienced coaches and mentors.

We’d like to stress that the Super Leagues series is open to everyone - you don’t have to be a club member to take part. It is open to all nationalities and skills levels - the emphasis is firmly on participation and having a good time! Even if you didn’t attend last weekend, newcomers are still more than welcome! Please note that there is no training on Monday or Wednesday nights. When the Ó Crualaoí Super Leagues concludes, we will revert to indoor training on Saturday mornings. Full details will be published here in due course.

U10:

We enjoyed a short break from competitions for the October Bank Holiday Weekend but our Ó Crualaoí Super League events resume next Saturday, November 1 at 10 am at Fermoy GAA pitch. We’ve enjoyed some outstanding matches so far and we anticipate two more thrilling weekends of clashes. Newcomers are still more than welcome - and, remember, it is all about fun! The usual rules apply - €2 towards the cost of pitch hire, proper playing gear and a drink of water for refreshment.

U16:

We play the semi-final of the Cork City Gaelic Football League on Monday evening next, November 3. The game will be played at 7.30 pm against Nemo Rangers at Nemo’s grounds under floodlights. This should prove a really exciting clash and all supporters are very welcome to come along and cheer on the lads. We have a special training session today (Thursday) at 2.30 pm at Fermoy pitch to prepare for the League semi-final.

COACHING:

A very interesting series of coaching sessions are coming up that should appeal to mentors and coaches with all the juvenile divisions. On November 3, Pat Moore will give a hurling workshop at Na Piarsiagh with the emphasis on striking skills from the hand.

On November 10, Martin Fogerty will give a special hurling workshop at Na Piarsaigh, Martin is the Kilkenny senior hurling trainer and he will do defensive and attacking skills.

On November 17 Pat O’Shea will give a Gaelic football session in Mallow GAA Club.

On November 24 Vince Cooper will give a Gaelic football workshop in Clonakilty. These workshops will all begin at 7pm and end at 9pm with 15 minutes left at the end for questions and answers.

They cost €10 which is payable at the door. However it is important that you ring Kevin O’Callaghan in advance to ensure the workshops go ahead on the advertised dates.

Please bring a biro and paper to take notes of the drills and activities. Full details can be obtained from Kevin at (086) 8532375.

CONGRATS:

Well done to Padraig de Roiste on his recent selection for the Cork panel. Congratulations are due not only to Padraig but also to all the hardworking mentors who have committed so much time to training and preparations this year!

CONTACTS:

The Club has acquired a mobile phone, which we will use for keeping members informed of events within teams and the club generally. We have started sending out messages with this phone and are hopeful that it will prove to be useful.

The number is: (086) 3385578. Please save this number on your phone so that when messages come in you will know whom it's from. Also, please do not reply to messages from this phone as it will clog up the Inbox. If we have made an error and you are receiving messages, which are not correctly targeted please inform the appropriate mentor and we will rectify the problem.

FERMOY GAA SCHOOLS COACH

QUINN-HEALTHCARE SCHOOLS COACHING CORNER BY JOHN DONEGAN

Things have been quiet on the club front this week, due to the mid term break for the schools, so the coaches and players both got a well-earned break. Round three of the Ó Crualaoi sponsored Street league continues this Saturday morning November 1 at 10am up at the main pitch, so why not go up to support the lads and watch the players of the future for Fermoy GAA club.

Well done to the club again on hosting another inter-provincial fixture with Munster taking on their Ulster counterparts. Well done to Fermoy teacher Tomás Ó Sé who played for Munster and also on the birth of his daughter. Congratulations to both proud parents.

A special mention must go to the pitch maintenance team who again have done the club proud, as always by having the grounds in tip-top condition, even at very short notice for the Munster v Ulster match. 2 in a row what price a 3 in a row? Well done lads.

Class of the week this week is 1st, 2nd and 3rd class Clondulane.

FERMOY GAA CLUB NEWS

VOTES OF SYMPATHY

The sympathy of the club is extended to parents, brother and sister of the late Frank (Bobby) O’Driscoll, Corrin View Estate, Fermoy and Dunmanway.

The late Bobby, who was only 19, was well known to the members of our Juvenile and Minor club as he played in all grades up to the minor grades, those members and their mentors formed a guard of honour at his funeral on Wednesday last.

Once again, our heartfelt sympathies go out to Frank senior and Bridget (nee O’Flynn) brother Kevin, sisters Siobhan and Paula, his grandmother, uncles and aunts and relatives on their great but tragic loss.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

The sympathy of the club is also extended to East Cork Board secretary Willie Ring and all the Ring families on the recent death of their father the late Mr Willie John Ring who was also president of Cloyne GAA club.

The late Willie John who was a brother to the late and great Christy Ring the legendary Cork hurler, was a regular at matches all over the county and a grand person to speak with, he was always very proud of his club in Cloyne and of their achievements.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis.

FERMOY PITCH & PUTT CLUB

AGM

On Friday last October 24 we held our much-anticipated annual general meeting. It was very well attended and we thank the members for that. Brian Shinnick, chairman of the entire GAA complex was in attendance and very kindly officiated at the election of officers for the coming year.

John O’Keeney, outgoing chairman of the Pitch & Putt Club thanked the members for the large turnout, it is very important to have the AGM well supported. 2008 was a good year for the club, yes, it had its ups and downs, one of the downs was the passing away of members, most notably Eily Brady who seldom missed any event held by the club. As John said, many others also went to their reward and he asked the assembly to bow their heads for a minute in silent prayer for all of those, this was observed reverently by all in attendance. John then went on to say that he would like if everyone could go away tonight with a thought in their heads as to what they could do for the club. This club he said, is not the chairman’s club, its your club, officers come and go but the members remain always. A huge amount of things go on throughout the year within the club and this requires a lot of effort and it seems to fall on the same few shoulders all the time. He went on to say that between now and next March the income for the club will be very small, because green fees will be down due to short evenings and poor weather, the income from weekend competitions will be down and yet we must survive for the next five or six months.

To get us through all this time we depend largely on the lotto, wages, equipment, sand and many other things associated with the running of the club still have to be paid for. The lotto brings in a lot of the necessary cash but it has to be worked at. John appealed to the members to get involved in the selling of tickets, even if they could only sell one or two extra, everything helps. On the night of the draw, two people are required, one from the Pitch & Putt Club and one from the GAA. John said it doesn’t require a degree in mathematics to do the job and he would like to see some extra volunteers coming forward. He went on to say, there are eight on the lotto committee at the moment, if that could be increased to twelve, it would mean that one would only have to be present at the draw once every twelve weeks, not a lot to ask.

John then went on to say that when it comes to open week, it’s the same few people who sit at the table booking in the players, writing the cards, filling in the register and giving out the cards for the draw. Surely he said it must be possible for many more people to get involved. We have one of the best-attended open weeks in the country and that means that quite a lot of work is required to have things running smoothly.

All I ask said John is two hours from any one member over the time of the open week and this would make such a difference for everyone. Despite the large number of players, it has always been a very successful event and a little more help during the week would keep it that way. Another thing is the setting up of the prizes. It is done on the Wednesday night before the event and a bit more help here also would be appreciated. This also goes for the giving out of prizes on the Sunday and Monday evenings at the close of the competition, just a little effort would help a lot.

The election of officers took place after this and as previously mentioned, Brian Shinnick took the nominations etc., the principal posts filled were Chairman: Joe Lillis, Captain: Damien Burke, Vice captain: Willie Burke, Lady captain: Margaret Barry, Vice captain: Margaret Rea, Treasurer: Nell Richards, Registrar: John Richards, Competition Secretary: Liz Ducey, Juvenile officer: Cathy Doyle. We hope to fill the positions of Secretary and PRO before the first governing body meeting. All in all a good nights work!

CONGRATULATIONS.

At the AGM, the following people were congratulated for their achievement in being named, Player of the Year. Michael Shane McDonagh in the juvenile section, this young lad has had a brilliant year, his name has appeared so often in the winners list that the computer can spell his name all by itself. The ladies title went to Sonia Quirke who also had a great year. Sonia only joined the adults in the early part of the year having done very well with the juveniles; the fact that she is player of the year shows just how good she is. There was quite a few doing battle for the gents title but the man who came through was none other than (no prizes for guessing) John Cahill. As is usual for John, he won almost everything worth winning and remains a force to be reckoned with. He was a very popular winner; his affable manner makes him amenable to everyone. Very well done to all three of you, best of luck for the coming year.

UPCOMING EVENTS.

This coming Sunday we will have the Shaws Scratch cup competition, so don’t forget, November 2 (Sunday) this important event will be played out. The game will be played over 36 holes, it will be stroke play and the entry fee is €5. Draw times on the day will be 10am, 12 noon and 2pm. The following Sunday will see the beginning of the Credit Union Leagues, these games will be played over four weeks with the final taking place on the fifth week. This competition will begin each week on the Friday afternoon at 3pm with the usual draw times on Saturday and Sunday.

Very important, please put your name on the sheet on the club notice board on or before Thursday November 6 or you might just miss the draw.

THE LOTTO.

We didn’t have a winner last week so the jackpot now stands at €9,200. The numbers drawn last week were: 3, 8, 19 and 26. The lucky dips went to Elaine Redmond, c/o Paul Redmond, Billy Kelleher, c/o The Long Bar, Ted and Miah, c/o The Forge Bar, Sadie Burke, c/o self, Terry Baker, c/o self and Gus Kelleher, c/o self.
